Pure Water & Waste Water Treatment TOC Analyzers

What TOC is and how it is measured.

A whole variety of organic matter can be present in water, which cannot be determined individually. At least not without considerable analytical effort and within a short time. This is why the so-called sum parameter TOC (total organic carbon) is used.

The TOC measures a samples organic loads and is thus an important indicator for water quality. Since it includes all carbon compounds as one mass, it is exactly defined and an absolute quantity. Therefore, it may be determined directly.

Online-TOC-Measurement for steam and condensate. Optimal process control.

Acid products like carbonic acid increase the conductivity in boiler plants and cause corrosion and deposits. As well it can be built foams and coatings, which must be kept as low as possible for efficient boiler operation. Therefore, continous monitoring of organic pollutant is essential for an economical and safe operation.

LAR's QuickTOCcondensate is the ultimate online TOC analyser for the determination of total organic carbon (TOC) for steam and condensates.

Warm, warmer, hot. Tracking organic load at 1,200°C.

The catalyst-free ceramic oven is the centrepiece of the QuickTOCcondensate. At 1,200°C, it reliably dissolves all carbon bonds and thus enables a complete analysis of samples. Despite the high temperatures used, absolute safety is guaranteed in all settings. For this end, the QuickTOCcondensate can be delivered with a number of different housings, depending on the intended location. That way the analyser itself can be safely at high corrosive places as well as in Ex-Zones.

The QuickTOCcondensate. Ultra quick measurements and maintenance.

The TRUE TOC measurement takes place in less than 3 minutes. The TRUE TC you even get in a minute. The TC is particulary advantageous if a high proportion of the TIC is present, which is hereby considered.

This speed guarantees that very short peaks can be determined very well during a daily cycle. The analyser's availability is over 98%.

Calibration and validation. Ready at any time.

LAR offers with the patented calibration and validation technique QuickCalibration the opportunity to check automaticly and remotely the analyser at any time. In contrast to the use of liquid standards, that must be produced or purchased expensively, our unique method uses a defined gas. Such a test gas is stable for a long time and is ideal for automatic calibrations without personnel on site. So you can prove fast whether your analyser measures correct.

The loop injection. For clean sample dosage.

The sample is injected into the furnace via an injection loop. Moreover, this loop defines simultaneously the sample volume. The loop system ensures that the sample is 100% closed against ambient air. Even the smallest impurities are excluded. The sample can be analyzed correctly in the lowest ppb range.

Contamination of test equipment in the loop system is technically impossible.

Online TOC measurement for pure water. Optimal process control.

The QuickTOCpurity of LAR Process Analysers AG is the online TOC measurement system for the determination of total carbon (TC), total organic carbon (TOC), total inorganic carbon (TIC) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in pure water.

Warm, warmer, hot. Tracking organic load at 1,200°C.

The catalyst-free ceramic oven is the centrepiece of the QuickTOCpurity. At 1,200°C, it reliably dissolves all carbon bonds and thus enables a complete analysis of samples. The loop system ensures that the sample is 100% closed against ambient air. Even the smallest impurities are excluded. The sample can be analyzed correctly in the lowest ppb range.

Catalysts. For our analysers simply not necessary.

Catalysts are only necessary for a low temperature catalytic "high temperature" oxidation (680 – 1,100°C) to support the oxidisation of the carbon bonds. However, the performance of the catalysts reduces over time. This affects the measurement results, necessitates continual new calibration and eventually requires that the catalysts be replaced. Because of their high temperatures our analysers do not need any catalysts. We want to save you the trouble: With the QuickTOCpurity.

TC determination. Quick beneficial.

Inorganic carbon (carbonate) reacts in the boiler to produce carbonic acid, which attacks the metal wall of the boiler, pipes and heat exchangers. The monitoring of total carbon includes this part and minimizes the risk. In addition, the measurement cycle of the TC determination is only about 1 minute, so a fast and reliable monitoring of ultrapure water is ensured.

Calibration and validation. Fully automatic.

LAR offers with the patented calibration and validation technique QuickCalibration the opportunity to check automaticly and remotely at any time the analyser. In contrast to the use of liquid standards, that must be produced or purchased expensively, our unique method uses a defined gas. Such a test gas is stable for a long time and is ideal for automatic calibrations without personnel on site.

Contamination of test equipment in the loop system is technically impossible.

The QuickTOCpurity. Ultrafast measurement and maintenance.

The QuickTOCpurity works in batch mode and determines the TRUE TOC in under 3 minutes. The TRUE TC you even get in 1 minute.

The TC is particularly advantageous if a high proportion of the TIC is present. This speed guarantees that very short peaks can be determined very well during a daily cycle. The analyser's availability is over 98%.

As even in high salt applications its weekly service is about 30 minutes.

Online TOC for airport applications. Especially for de-icing water.

Surface water and de-icing waste water should be continously monitored - from an ecological as well as economic point of view. By using reliable online measurement systems high waste water charges can be avoided.

LAR's QuickTOCairport is the ultimate online TOC analyser for the determination of total organic carbon (TOC) for water on airports.

Exact Analysis. At 1,200°C, the TRUE TOC is determined.

For an exact TOC measurement all carbons bonds - incl. particles - must be reliably combusted. LAR's unique robot system is capable of transporting and measuring a high content of solid matter without any filtration of the sample. Additionally, LAR's ultra high temperature method with combustion at 1,200°C guarantees the complete oxidation of the sample.

This analysis results in TRUE TOC.

The building blocks principle for a tailor made measurement instrument.

The use of inert materials as well as a pump, which is installed downstream of the sample stream, prevent carryover and memory effects caused by absorption and adsorption. The automatic ranging feature ensures reliable measurements between 0.1..50,000 mg/l C without dilution or pretreatment of samples. This means, fluctuating loads and adhesive samples are easily analysed.

Catalysts. For our analysers simply not necessary.

Lower temperatures at 680-1,000°C need catalysts to provide satisfying oxidation power. Even then complex compounds often are not determined. Because of the high temperature the QuickTOCairport does not need any catalysts.

High salt concentrations. No problem with the QuickTOCairport.

This online TOC analyser can handle salt concentrations up to even 300 gr/l sodium chloride (NaCl). Salts that melt at the temperature of 1,200°C are vaporised by the combustion power and carried out with the carrier gas to settle in a special retrieving device. Through the high temperature, the salts present can easily be discharged. They move through the oven in fluid form and are eventually carried out of the oven by the condensate. Finally, they are deposited in a retaining device, from which they can easily and quickly be removed. That way, no salt deposits can form in the oven.

The QuickTOCairport. Ultra quick measurements and maintenance.

The QuickTOCairport is designed to operate in a batch mode. The TRUE TOC measurement takes place in less than 3 minutes. This speed guarantees that very short peaks can be determined very well during a daily cycle. The analyser's availability is over 98%. As even in high salt applications its weekly service is about 30 minutes.

Oil in Water Monitoring

Leakages of oils, fats and grease into process and waste water systems, not only result in product losses, but is also very expensive and problematic to treat.  Our LAR QuickOIL Analyser systems provide a tailor made monitoring solution for these difficult sample applications.

Oils and fats are the main components in a variaty of products such as fuels and edible oils.  During production processes, these oils and fats can leak into the process and waste water systems.  This is not only costly to the producers, who effectively are losing product down the drain, but also add to the additional process costs to purify and treat the contaminated water.

The QuickOIL Analyser system determines hydrocarbons in water - which includes all fats and oils.

What is oil actually?

Oil is a collective term for viscous, sticky and fatty hydrocarbon substances. Oils and fats are extracted from raw materials, such as seeds and animals fats. Mineral oils are processed in oil refineries, where tons of steam and hot water are being used. The purity of such water is a big concern and requires fast and reliable analysis methods.

Oils are hydrophobic and therefore it cannot be mixed with water. Oil can be present as free oil, as an oil sheen and / or as tiny droplets. But at increased temperatures, in turbulent conditions and when some process solvents are leaked into the water, oil can be dissolved or gets emulsified. As the water temperature slowly drops, the emulsified oil starts to separate, thickens, hardens and solidifies. Oil becomes fat. The typical solidification range depends on the type of oil, e.g. palm oil at 31to 41°C. As a consequence, a layer of fat is built up in process pipes and/or sewer systems, restricting the water flow.

It is extremely difficult to clean oily and fatty wastewater. Whilst free oil rises to the water surface where it can easily be skimmed, the emulsified and dissolved oil flows untreated through the oil and fat separator.  This can have dire effects on any WWTP.

Monitoring of Oil in Water

The LAR QuickOIL Analyser system does not need any dilution or pretreatment of the sample.  The high temperature combustion method used with this Analyser system ensures that the sample is completely oxidised without the need for reagents or catalysts.

High salt concentrations can easily be handled on the Analyser system.  For special high salt applications, the Analyser system can handle salt concentrations of up to 300 g/L.

The Analyser comes complete with a dedicated maintenance fee sample conditioning system (FlowSampler) that ensures a representative sample is analysed at all times.

The OIW measurement on the QuickOIL Analyser system takes between 2-3 minutes.  Up to 6 samples streams can be monitored on one Analyser system.  These Analyser systems are of a modular design and can be expanded on at any time in the future to encorporate additional parameters and sample streams.
