Microbiologically Induced Corrosion (MIC) costs the oil and gas industry billions of dollars each year.  

Condensate and Boiler feed water is an expensive resource and the effective monitoring and reuse of this commodity can save companies thousands of Rands annually.  By monitoring the water quality of the boiler feed water, rapid corrective actions can be taken if the presence of corrosive substances are detected.  Early detection of these substances will protect the boiler systems against unnecessary corrosion.

Typically one of the factors driving high costs and a cause of considerable frustration for corrosion engineers is the necessity to determine the presence of Sulfate-Reducing Bacteria (SRB).

Detection of oil & fuel spillages are of paramount importance - not only for the environment but also for the petrochemical industry.  Spillages are costly and the aim is for products to make it through the manufacturing process, not go down the drain. Drilling fluids have complex chemistries for which environmental risk assessment is performed.  Regulatory testing for drilling muds is a large application in the oilfield.
